    About the Stairs Layout

Stairs is the odd one out. Instead of rising to a peak in the middle, its three layers climb to the right in broad steps, so the board is lopsided and you start with very few moves.

It's the board where you'll feel most short of options. On average you start with fewer free matches here than on any other full-size layout, and the top step has to come off before the lower ones can move.

    Stairs by the Numbers

144 tiles over 3 layers, 12 tiles wide and 6 rows high. These percentages show how often a bot choosing pairs at random won, across 2,000 games at each level:

    91.9%
    Easy
    26.5%
    Medium
    2.9%
    Hard
    0.8%
    Expert

A thinking player will do far better than a random one. See how we measured this.

    Stairs Mahjong Solitaire FAQ

Why do I have so few moves on Stairs?

Its rows are all long and full, and the upper layers are the only ones free at the start. So fewer tiles are free than on boards with lots of short rows.

Is Stairs harder than the Turtle?

In our simulations, yes at Medium. A random player wins noticeably less often on Stairs than on the Turtle.
