    About the Butterfly Layout

Butterfly has two wings that widen toward the middle, with a two-tile-wide body running down the center. It's only three layers high, so more tiles are visible from the start than on the taller boards.

The body cuts each row in two. A wing can't be cleared across the middle, so each one works like its own small board with an open outer edge.

    Butterfly by the Numbers

144 tiles over 3 layers, 12 tiles wide and 8 rows high. These percentages show how often a bot choosing pairs at random won, across 2,000 games at each level:

    91.1%
    Easy
    39.9%
    Medium
    4.8%
    Hard
    1.8%

A thinking player will do far better than a random one. See how we measured this.

    Butterfly Mahjong Solitaire FAQ

Is Butterfly easier than the Turtle?

They're very close in our simulations. Butterfly shows you more tiles at the start, which suits a careful player, since you can see more of what you're choosing between.

How many layers does Butterfly have?

Three. That makes it one of the flatter 144-tile boards, with most tiles visible early on.
