How to Play Spider Solitaire One Suit: Beginner Guide

5 min read

Spider Solitaire One Suit is the easiest version of Spider — all 104 cards use only Spades, so any card can form a valid sequence with any other. It is the perfect introduction to the Spider family of games.

One Suit Spider Setup

One Suit Spider uses two decks (104 cards) with all non-Spade suits replaced by Spades. The 104 Spade cards are dealt face-down into 10 columns, with only the top card of each column face-up. The remaining cards form the stock (dealt 10 at a time).

How It Works

Because all cards are the same suit, any card can go on any card one rank higher. A 7 can go on any 8, regardless of what suit the 8 appears to be. This makes sequencing much easier than 2 or 4 suit Spider.

Complete a King-to-Ace sequence of 13 cards in the same suit and it is removed from the tableau. Complete all 8 sequences to win.

Beginner Strategy

One Suit Spider has a near-100% win rate with basic strategy. Focus on:

Uncover Face-Down Cards

Always prioritize revealing hidden cards. Move face-up cards to expose what is underneath, then plan from there.

Build Long Sequences

Longer sequences can be moved as units, giving you flexibility. Aim to build 4-5 card sequences before dealing from the stock.

Create Empty Columns

Even in One Suit Spider, empty columns are powerful. Try to clear a column before each stock deal to give yourself maximum flexibility.

Moving to 2 and 4 Suit Spider

Once you are comfortable winning One Suit Spider consistently, try 2 Suit Spider (Spades + Hearts). The same strategies apply, but now you must build same-suit sequences to remove them — mixing suits creates immovable piles. After mastering 2 Suit, 4 Suit Spider is the ultimate challenge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the win rate for Spider Solitaire One Suit?

One Suit Spider is nearly always winnable — experienced players win 95%+ of games. The win rate is much higher than 2 Suit (30-40%) or 4 Suit (10-15%).

Do suits matter in One Suit Spider?

No — all cards are treated as the same suit. Any card can be placed on a card one rank higher. Sequences do not need to match a specific suit.

How is One Suit Spider different from 4 Suit Spider?

In One Suit, all cards use a single suit so any sequence is valid. In 4 Suit, only same-suit sequences can be removed, making mixed sequences useless dead weight.

How many deals are there from the stock in Spider?

There are 5 deals from the stock in all Spider variants (50 cards). Each deal adds one card to each of the 10 columns.

Is Spider One Suit good for beginners?

Yes — it is the recommended starting point for anyone new to Spider Solitaire. The mechanics are the same as harder variants, but the win rate is high enough to be encouraging.
