The Foundation of FreeCell Strategy

Before making any move in FreeCell, spend 30-60 seconds scanning the board. Identify: where are the Aces? Where are the 2s? What sequences can you build? What cards are buried and need to be uncovered? This planning phase is where FreeCell games are won or lost.

Locate Your Aces First

Aces are the key to unlocking the game. If an Ace is buried under 3 cards, you need to move those 3 cards somewhere valid before you can access it. Plan the chain of moves from the end (placing the Ace) back to the start.

Count Your Available Moves

With 4 free cells and no empty columns, you can move sequences of up to 5 cards. Each empty column doubles this capacity. Always know how many cards you can move before attempting a complex sequence transfer.

The Supermove Rule

The "supermove" is FreeCell's most important mechanic for intermediate players. You can move a sequence of N cards if you have enough free cells and empty columns: N = (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns).

Always calculate this before attempting to move a sequence. Running out of free cells mid-move is how games are lost.

Building the Tableau

Build the tableau into long, ordered sequences that can be moved as units. Prioritize sequences that serve two purposes: they expose buried low cards AND they connect to existing sequences you need.

Build Descending Alternating Color

Always build tableau sequences in descending rank with alternating colors (red 7 on black 8, etc.). This is the only way to move cards as a group in FreeCell.

Target the Longest Columns

Columns with more cards take more moves to uncover. Prioritize working down them early so buried Aces and 2s become accessible before you run out of free cells.

Do Not Block Low Cards

Avoid placing high cards on columns that contain low cards (2s, 3s) you will need to access soon. This is one of the most common mid-game mistakes.

Managing Free Cells

Free cells are your most precious resource. Every occupied free cell reduces your supermove capacity and your flexibility. Follow these rules:

  1. Never fill all 4 free cells simultaneously unless you have a specific plan for emptying them.
  2. Use free cells for cards you will need soon — not for cards you are just parking indefinitely.
  3. Plan the exit route before parking — know exactly where the card will go before you place it in a free cell.
  4. Low cards go to free cells last — Aces, 2s, and 3s should go to foundations, not free cells.

Endgame Technique

Once all face-up cards are accessible (no buried cards), the game becomes a sequence of calculated moves. In the endgame, focus on sending cards to foundations in the right order. A common mistake is sending a high card to the foundation before the lower cards of its suits are ready — this can create a roadblock.

💡 Pro Tip: In the endgame, try to advance all four foundation suits roughly evenly. If Hearts is at 8 but Spades is still at 3, you may need Spades cards that are trapped under Hearts cards.

When to Restart

Since ~100% of FreeCell deals are solvable, if you get stuck it is almost always your move sequence that was wrong. Use the undo button liberally, or restart the same game number and try a completely different approach. Some FreeCell deals require very specific move orders — do not be ashamed to use hints or look up solutions.
