How to Play FreeCell Solitaire
Objective
Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each foundation from Ace to King in the same suit.
Setup
All 52 cards are dealt face-up into 8 tableau columns. The first 4 columns have 7 cards each, and the last 4 columns have 6 cards each. You have 4 free cells (temporary storage) and 4 foundation piles.
Basic Rules
- Tableau Building: Cards must be placed in descending order with alternating colors, just like Klondike. A red 6 goes on a black 7.
- Foundation Building: Start with Aces and build up by suit (A, 2, 3... K). Each foundation contains one suit.
- Free Cells: Any single card can be placed in an empty free cell. Cards in free cells can be moved to tableau or foundations.
- Moving Stacks: You can move sequences, but the number of cards you can move depends on empty free cells and empty columns.
- Empty Columns: Any card (not just Kings) can be placed in an empty tableau column.
Moving Multiple Cards
The maximum cards you can move = (empty free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns). With 2 empty free cells and 1 empty column: (2+1) × 2 = 6 cards max.
Winning
Nearly all FreeCell deals are solvable! You win when all foundations are complete. The challenge is finding the right sequence of moves.
FreeCell Strategy Guide
Priority 1: Keep Free Cells Empty
Empty free cells are your most valuable resource. They determine how many cards you can move at once. Only use free cells when necessary, and try to empty them quickly by moving cards to foundations or tableau.
Priority 2: Create Empty Columns
Empty columns are even more powerful than free cells. They double your moving capacity. Focus on clearing shorter columns first to create space.
Priority 3: Build Down in Alternating Colors
Build tableau piles in descending order with alternating colors. This creates organized sequences that can be moved together and eventually transferred to foundations.
Expose Aces Early
Finding and moving Aces to foundations should be an early priority. Look for Aces buried in the tableau and plan how to uncover them.
Plan Your Moves
Since all cards are visible, you can plan entire sequences of moves. Before moving, trace the complete path: "If I move this here, then that card goes there, which frees this..."
Advanced FreeCell Tips
- Count Your Capacity: Always know how many cards you can move. Formula: (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns).
- Don't Block Low Cards: Avoid placing cards on top of Aces, 2s, or 3s. These need to reach foundations early.
- Same-Color Stacking Warning: Avoid building long same-color sequences (like 8♥ on 9♥). They can't be moved together and block the cards beneath.
- Use the Undo Button: Experiment freely! Try different move sequences and undo if they don't work out.
- Work from the Bottom: Focus on cards deep in the tableau. Surface cards will naturally become accessible as you clear below.
